Bonar Floors, based in Derbyshire, England has developed Flytex, a range of lightweight carpet specifically developed to satisfy the needs of the aircraft industry. Its construction is said to make it the ideal choice for cabin floors where safety, comfort and durability must be combined with ease of cleaning.

At less than 1 kg/m2 in weight, the associated fuel cost savings can reportedly be substantial, and using Flytex will increase capacity for additional cargo. Flytex has been approved to FAR 25.853, JAR 25.853 and ABD0031 flammability requirements and for additional peace of mind, carries a 10-year wear guarantee.

According to Bonar Floors the product construction ensures that Flytex is installed with ease, using existing recommended adhesives and tapes. The product requires no edge binding prior to fitting, as Flytex can be easily cut and will not fray, saving both time and money on installation costs.

Other benefits include:

  • significant weight savings,

  • hard wearing and durable,

  • no dirt retention making cleaning easy,

  • underfoot comfort and safety – slip resistance,

  • cabin air quality (BAF endorsement),

  • 10-year wear guarantee,

  • no fraying allowing easy “spot repairs”,

  • thermal insulation,

  • approved by the British Allergy Foundation (BAF), and

  • waterproof.

Flexible manufacturing processes offer the ability to create personalised colour schemes and innovative designs. Companies can work with Bonar’s own in-house design department to generate bespoke designs for a unique interior style which can be easily reproduced throughout the cabin and bulkhead.

Tests carried out by the internationally recognised BAF are reported to have demonstrated that Flytex by Bonar Floors can have a “positive impact on the lives of allergy sufferers”, compared to using other textile or smooth floor coverings. The construction of Flytex helps’ reduce the amount of microscopic dust and allergens in the atmosphere and allows for their easy removal by vacuuming. This ensures less airborne allergens and pollen are present in aircraft cabins, helping create a more comfortable environment for passengers.
