Ayrshire Aerospace Park secures first tenant

A 120,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) facility is to be built at the Prestwick International Aerospace Park, UK, with the creation of over 100 new jobs. The building work will be completed at the beginning of 2004 and it will become operational next June, delivering repaired units to airline customers.

The existing Goodrich facility, part of its Aerostructures business, is situated 1 mile from the proposed new building, adjacent to Glasgow Prestwick International Airport. Anne McGuire, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland welcomed Goodrich's announcement at a ground-breaking ceremony on the new facility's site. She said: "The decision by Goodrich to expand its maintenance, repair and overhaul operations at Prestwick is a welcome news for Scotland, as is the creation of an additional 120 high quality jobs here in Ayrshire, as well as the safeguarding of 130 other posts. The confidence shown by Goodrich, in consolidating the company's presence in Ayrshire, highlights that Scotland remains a place where innovation can flourish. This has been made all the more achievable through effective partnership- working between Goodrich, government, Scottish Development International, the local enterprise company and local authorities."

Jack Carmola, Goodrich's Segment President, Engine Systems said: "Goodrich has a balanced portfolio of businesses and we are focussed on ensuring they are well positioned to capitalise on the expected recovery in the aerospace industry. This development is part of that approach and demonstrates the faith Goodrich has in the workforce here – it is a very well motivated and highly skilled team."

Steve Callan Managing Director, Goodrich Aerostructures – Prestwick added: "The Prestwick MRO facility has met its business targets year after year and it has ambitious growth plans. This move to a new building is a great news for the area. It is a significant investment by Goodrich and represents a tremendous opportunity to further develop the quality and efficiency levels of service we offer to our customers."

Evelyn McCann, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire, said: "This is excellent news and is a clear demonstration of Scotland's world-wide reputation in the aerospace sector. This follows the recent launch of Scotland's national aerospace strategy, which is aimed at attracting more high quality jobs like this to Scotland. The Prestwick International Aerospace Park was created to attract precisely this type of investment, and we look forward to this being the first of many other aerospace businesses locating there."
