UQM Technologies, Inc., a developer of alternative energy technologies, recently announced that a UQM integrated motor and electronic controller product designed for use in aircraft auxiliary systems has completed rigorous DO-160D aircraft qualification testing. DO-160D aircraft qualification testing is a rigorous set of standard procedures and environmental test criteria for the testing of airborne equipment for the entire spectrum of aircraft from light general aviation aircraft and helicopters through jumbo jets developed by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA). Examples of tests under the DO-160D standard include altitude, temperature extremes, vibration, power input, radio frequency susceptibility, lightning and electrostatic discharge. The UQM system was developed to the design specifications of an aerospace customer for introduction this year.

William G. Rankin, President and CEO of UQM Technologies said, “The successful completion of rigorous aircraft qualification testing for this system represents a major milestone for our technology and has created another significant path for its commercialization. In this particular application, our motor and power electronic controller were designed as a single, tightly integrated package to replace a brush motor system and provide our customer with significant advantages. The ability to qualify UQM motors and electronics for aircraft applications opens a whole new market where performance, energy efficiency, packaging and reduced weight are highly valued by both aircraft OEM's and product suppliers to that industry.”
