HBM is ready for TEDS

Keywords: Equipment, Measurement, Software

According to HBM it is using its expertise in measurement technology to lead the industry by introducing a range of equipment capable of providing transducer electronic data sheet (TEDS) functions. HBM claims to be the only global company that specialises in the complete measurement chain from transducer through to amplifier, including all associated software.

The aim of TEDS is to transfer essential transducer characteristics to an amplifier in an electronic format, enabling it to select the correct settings automatically and start taking measurements immediately. Equipment using TEDS will have to conform to the IEEE1452.4 standard that is to be adopted shortly. This specifies the data format and the digital interface for the electronic datasheet.

Many HBM amplifiers can already be supplied complete with TEDS and transducers that are already installed can be retrofitted. The range available includes force, pressure and torque transducers based on strain-gage full bridges and inductive displacement transducers. To simplify integration, the identification module is located in the cable or the transducer's connector. Eventually the identification module will be included in the transducer housing.

Amplifiers also have to be equipped appropriately for users to fully benefit from TEDS. With HBM's MGCplus, the only hardware requirement is that special, and relatively inexpensive, connector plates must be fitted. Amplifier modules must have the firmware version that supports TEDS and this can be achieved with most current modules by a simple, free firmware upload.

HBM has also developed and patented a method of wiring TEDS in the strain-gage, or inductive transducer, to facilitate the introduction of the technology. These so-called components that support TEDS can be used with conventional components and this aspect will be of particular importance to users during their transition period.
