Social Psychologist Dr Robert Helmreich is the recipient of this year's Flight Safety Foundation's Human Factors in Aviation Safety Award, sponsored by Airbus. The award, presented at the foundation's recent annual European Aviation Safety Seminar in Barcelona, recognises more than 30 years of research by Dr Helmreich into issues that affect individuals' and teams' performances in complex settings such as cockpits.

Dr Helmretch, a professor at the University of Texas, and his team were responsible for developing crew resource management training programmes to improve the effectiveness of flight crews, which are now mandatory for all airlines worldwide. In recent years, his work has focused on how cultural factors affect crew behaviour. Airbus has sponsored the award since it was established in 1999 to encourage research that helps the industry better understand human factors in order to further enhance safety and air travel.
