The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently fully certified STG Aerospace's SafTGlo system for use on Boeing 747-400 aircraft, following a successful nai¨ve evacuation test in Marana, Arizona.

The certification is the first to be awarded by the FAA for a photoluminescent (PL) floorpath marking system on multi-deck aircraft and is another certification to add to SafTGlo's growing list.

Commenting on the FAA approval, STG Aerospace CEO Peter Stokes, said: “We are delighted to get this approval from the FAA. From the outset we have worked with airworthiness authorities across the world to develop protocols for PL systems. This will add to our existing list of 22 FAA STC's covering 57 different models of aircraft and product approvals from EASA and another 29 national authorities worldwide”.

Earlier this year, STG Aerospace celebrated delivering its 200th kilometre of SafTGlo. It is expected that sales of SafTGlo will continue strongly with the addition of the B747-400 fleet as potential users. STG's SafTGlo is already fitted to thousands of civil and military passenger- carrying aircraft around the world.

STG Aerospace was established in 1995 to exploit its novel and alternative technologies that provide simple and cost- effective solutions for safety critical applications in commercial and military aircraft. The company's unique PL systems “store” and simultaneously emit light giving highly visible emergency exit guidance for up to 16h in darkness, after a short period of “charging” with normal cabin lighting.

SafTGlo is described as an easy to install low cost alternative to electrical floorpath marking systems. It is said to be 100 per cent reliable and is already installed in thousands of aircraft for hundreds of airlines around the world.
