NATS wins prestigious award for innovation

National Air Traffic Services has won a global award for innovation at the IET's annual Innovation in Engineering Awards.

The Bournemouth based organisation won the Project Team award for the research, development and project management of a four year project which introduced the next generation of radar surveillance technology called Mode Select to London Airspace.

The NATS team were presented with the project team award for successfully overcoming significant technical challenges and being continuously innovative across the project lifecycle in order to reduce risks and meet stringent safety requirements.

The judges of the Project Team award recognised that the NATS project represented an extremely important innovation in an area of human safety which brought together vastly different stakeholders and implemented a novel approach.

A total of 17 awards, each sponsored by a major company, were presented and at a ceremony at the IET's London HQ in Savoy Place. The awards evening was hosted by TV personality Adam Hart-Davis.

The awards have been supported by the Department of Trade and Industry. Lord Sainsbury of Turville, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Science and Innovation at the DTI attended the awards.

The IET has worked closely with the DTI and the Queen's Awards Office to promote the Innovation category of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

Dr Alf Roberts, CEO of the IET said: “These awards recognise the vital role that innovation in engineering plays in the global economy. On behalf of the IET I would like to congratulate all the winners who have displayed outstanding innovation in their respective categories.”
