On-line survey seeks specialists views on aircraft cabin fires

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched an on-line survey to gather the views of cabin crew, flight crew, trainers and other interested parties on the current training practices and standards involved in dealing with in-flight fires.

The survey will help inform an evaluation of current fire training practices and standards for cabin crew that has been commissioned by the CAA. The study is entitled: “Training needs analysis for cabin crew fire training” and will be carried out by RGW Cherry & Associates Ltd

Janice Fisher, Head of the CAA Cabin Safety Office, said: “An in-flight fire is one of the most serious threats to the safety of an aircraft. Cabin crew are both the first and last line of defence in such an event and it is important to ensure that their training enables them to deal effectively with an in-flight fire.”

“Cabin crew receive extensive training on emergency procedures, including dealing with fires, but a number of training issues have emerged in recent years that have led us to commission the study.”

The work will evaluate current and possible future issues and identify potential improvements in existing fire training to ensure that crews have the most appropriate skills to deal with the threat of fire.

Janice Fisher added: “The on-line survey is crucial to the analysis and is a valuable opportunity for those who are involved in this subject to comment on fire training and contribute ideas for improvement.”
