Chemistry helps keep planes flying safely and on time

Article Type: Materials From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 2.

The Dow Performance Fluids Business has introduced UCAR Endurance EG106 Aircraft Deicing/Anti-icing Fluid (ADF/AAF). The new formulation is available for the 2008 travel seasons.

UCAR Endurance EG106 ADF/AAF is an ethylene glycol-based Type IV fluid that is reported to be designed to provide extended protection against the accumulation of ice, snow and frost. The fluid is formulated to be used undiluted as an anti-icing fluid and is said to provide rapid and uniform wetting and spreading properties on aircraft surfaces. UCAR Endurance EG106 ADF/AAF is stated to conform to the technical requirements of SAE aerospace material specification 1428E. UCAR Endurance EG106 ADF/AAF may be applied using commercial anti- icing trucks. The fluid reportedly showed little or no viscosity degradation when sprayed through typical commercial equipment in a field spray test.

Deicing planes during cold and inclement weather plays an important role in keeping the traveling public safe; it helps planes leave their respective airports safely and in a timely manner.

Deicing/anti-icing fluids provide temporary protection to help prevent ice, snow or frost adhering to aircraft surfaces prior to flight departure. Proper use of these fluids is important and is governed by fluid use guidelines published by such regulatory agencies as Transport Canada and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as well as Aerospace Recommended Practices published by SAE International.

UCAR Endurance EG016 ADF/AAF contains ethylene glycol, water and special additives. These additives may include surfactants, thickeners, pH buffers, corrosion inhibitors and green dye. Ethylene glycol is used because it is a very effective freezing point depressant. Propylene glycol or ethylene glycol is typically the main ingredient in most aircraft deicing fluids. And this is true for the aircraft deicing and anti-icing fluids made by Dow.
