DMG combine mill-turn technology into machining centre configuration with latest DMU 60FD

Article Type: Aerospace technology From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 2

Five-axis, mill-turn technology with the flexibility of a universal 29 kW, B-axis horizontal and vertical machining centre spindle configuration, delivering up to 130 Nm of torque combined with a 700 mm direct-drive table able to rotate at up to 1,200 rpm, from Deckel Maho, is said to set a totally new standard in combined operation technology.

The Deckel Maho DMU 60FD duoBLOCK available from DMG (UK) of Luton crosses the boundary of turning and milling with its five-face capability for machining parts within a working envelope of 600 mm in X, 700 mm in Y and 600 mm in Z. Indeed, with the rigidity of the structure of the duoBLOCK design, the machine is able to combine both horizontal and vertical turning operations through the HSK-A63 automatically swivelling five-axis milling head with the turning tool rigidity locked within a form-fit crown gear. When turning, the rotary table is driven by a 37 kW motor and is able to sustain a load of 600 kg.

Rapid traverse rates are 60 m/min in each axis and ample toot storage from a 40 pocket magazine is standard with a chip-to-chip change time of under 4.5 sees. As an option, tool storage can be increased to 60, 120 or 180 units with a vertical chain magazine and horizontal changing mechanism. Spindle options are 12,000, 18,000 and 24,000 rpm with the mid-range unit being of totally new design. This incorporates condition monitoring spindle diagnosis to improve service life that includes bearing supervision and a capability to recognise any unbalance during run-up to cutting speed.

The duoBLOCK design configuration is well proven in the field as a strategic platform for milling due to the two thermo-symmetric heavy iron castings mounted on top of each other to form the column. This structure reduces the moving mass of the machine by 50 per cent. Three guideways are used for the X-axis giving’a constant level of support with maximum rigidity over the entire stroke of the Z-axis.

Control is via DMG ERGOIine with 19 in. flat screen and options of Siemens 840D solutionline or Heidenhain MillPlusslT. DMG SOFTkeys allowing customisation of frequency used operational sequences and screen selections, DMG SMARTkey enabling individualised authorisation of the operator and advance security of operation are included. Guarding is to the latest DMG trend setting standard giving 40 per cent improvement in visibility through large safety glass panels and total access to the machining zone through two slide-aside panels set at 90° to each other.

Within the standard package is a 600 l coolant tank with paper band filtration and chip conveyor and 40 bar through the spindle coolant supply. A pallet change version designated DMC60 FD duoBLOCK is also available.
