Concordia Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation launched

Article Type: University and research news From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 2

Concordia University and Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp. (P&WC) recently announced the creation of the Concordia Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (CIADI). It will be housed in Concordia’s Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science and will incorporate design laboratories, including the P&WC Multi-Disciplinary Design Laboratory, a comprehensive aerospace library, graduate student offices and a meeting room.

The institute will highlight Concordia’s commitment to provide the engineers of tomorrow with high quality, advanced professional training by collaborating with local aerospace companies for the benefit of our future graduates and the economic prosperity of Montreal, said Dr Nabil Esmail, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

CIADI is the result of an ongoing 25-year collaboration between two leaders in their respective fields. Concordia has a long-standing reputation for offering cutting-edge research and education in aerospace, and P&WC is a major company in the production of turbine engines for the aviation industry.

As our industry continues to grow, Pratt & Whitney Canada is always looking for top-quality engineers. The cooperative effort will introduce students to the industry by supplementing their classroom work with hands-on experience such as designing a gas turbine at our facilities in Longueuil, said Dr Jean Colpin, Vice President of Engineering at P&WC. P&WC is pleased to contribute US$1.2 M over the next five years towards this initiative which will enhance the quality of aerospace education in the Montreal region.

This endeavour will add a new dimension to our educational partnership as part of our new P&WC Technical Education Program, giving student engineers the opportunity to work on relevant aerospace design projects in a multi-disciplinary environment, said Dr Hany Moustapha, Senior Fellow and Manager of P&WC Technology, Technical Education & Collaboration Programs and newly appointed Director of CIADI. In addition, this institute will provide practicing engineers the opportunity to update their skills as the industry evolves.

The institute will be guided by an Advisory Board, which will advise on all matters and will act as a liaison between the aerospace industry and CIADI. The institute has already established educational partnerships with the new Advanced Design and Manufacturing Institute, a consortium of McMaster, Toronto, Waterloo and Western Ontario Universities, the MIT Gas Turbine Laboratory in Boston, Concepts ETI in Vermont and the Von-Korman Institute in Brussels.
