TMD Technologies powers ground mapping radar

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 5

A prototype power supply from TMD Technologies for ground mapping radar is proving successful in trials conducted by EADS Astrium.

The PTX8202 microwave power module (MPM) provides power for the X-band synthetic aperture radar system for ground mapping developed by Portsmouth-based EADS Astrium. Its ultra low-noise output has contributed significantly to the quality of the images produced.

“We will shortly be carrying out further intensive flight trials, and so far the MPM has worked perfectly,” said EADS Astrium Head of Radar Demonstrators, Martin Cohen.

Operating in the 9.0-10.7 GHz waveband, at up to 110 W cw, the TMD unit also claims improved reliability, which had been a particular problem with previous modules from other suppliers.

Other advantages claimed of the MPMs for this application are their light weight and compact size.
