Fundraising column
Fundraising column
As I contemplated the direction of this column for the coming year, I was struck by the valuable advice that had been written by my colleagues who are members of ALADN (Academic Library Advancement and Development Network), and also by the wisdom and talent of Gwen Leighty for initiating this column. I believe it was Gwen's idea to dip into the ALADN well and share a few of the presentations from the annual ALADN conference with the readers of this journal. Thanks Gwen for a great column!
In the column this year I followed Gwen's lead by asking several colleagues to share their library fundraising expertise. The first column should be valuable to library directors, deans and library advancement officers. Its timely topic is public trust and the similarity in spirit of the ALA Bill of Rights and the Donor Bill of Rights. It is written by Bill Myers, director of library development at the University of Kansas.
The next column will be written by Mary Ann Shields, director of development for the library at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Mary Ann gave a fascinating presentation at ALADN last spring in Tucson. Her topic is the organization and installation of a new library board. Several more colleagues will be asked to write columns this year and enrich our knowledge of library fundraising.
I strongly urge you to attend the ALADN conference this year in Miami, 27-30 March. You will meet great people, expand your knowledge of library fundraising and have an opportunity to visit donors in a warm, sunny climate.
