What’s on the web

ICT guidancewww.jisc.ac.uk

The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) works with further and higher education by providing strategic guidance, advice and opportunities to use information communication technology (ICT) to support teaching, learning, research and administration.

The JISC web site provides three main sets of guides to services and resources, each developed from a different point of view (the user, the issue, the resource):

User Guides are guides to services, publications, mailing lists, events, and other resources funded by the JISC. Items are briefly described, and a link (where appropriate) to a related web site is provided. The guides are developed from the point of view of the user. Currently, three guides are available, aimed at people new to (or unfamiliar with) the JISC, technical staff in HE/FE institutions, and staff based in FE institutions.

Resource Guides exist in both print and web formats. They offer a subject-based overview of the key resources that are available to all in the post-16 education sector. Each Resource Guide has been compiled by an adviser, a subject specialist, who, in consultation with members of their particular subject community, has selected, described and provided links to key resources within their subject area.

The Advice and Guidance section points to sources of advice and guidance about the issues and implications associated with using information and communications technology. Issues are identified and outlined for each topic, alongside information about the types of guidance and advice available with pointers to key sources.

A comprehensive and detailed resource – this site is well worth a visit.

Senior gobbledegookwww.e-managementdevelopment.co.uk

Exponential Management Development is an online management development site for senior managers in the private sector. The e-learning development training is customized to the specific needs of the individual senior manager. The site looks promising at first, but sadly a quick trawl produced a number of statements along the following lines: “We can spend for ever and a day trying to second guess history about what might be the significant developments across the planning horizons but we nevertheless find that forecasting and scenario planning will have diminishing returns for any resource input.” What?

Small pond trainingwww.bigfishtraining.com

Big Fish specializes in public relations training and workshops, teaching management and communication skills which can be immediately transferred to the workplace. This site is very interactive with easy to find course guide and some nice testimonials. The flash animation slows it down a bit – even on fast broadband – but the site is worth visiting. The company started “because we were fed up with courses that gave ‘instant’ results, but were forgotten as soon as the participants were back in the real world.” Reason enough for inclusion here, I feel.

Tutor timewww.aplustutors.co.uk

This is quite a sweet site – a directory of tutors across the UK with notes from each (and hourly rates). It is not particularly comprehensive – most towns only have one or two listings and some counties none at all but it is easy to use and a good place to start. As well as a list of tutors by region there is a separate on-line directory by subject. With a little refinement this will be an excellent resource.

And finally

A training quote from The Daily Telegraph. In a piece headed “Brussels pays 200,000 pounds to save prostitutes”: they wrote: “… the money will not be going directly into the prostitutes’ pocket, but will be used to encourage them to lead a better life. We will be training them for new positions in hotels.”
