Purpose – Forecasts how the work of US trainers will change and how training will be delivered. Interviews Ellen Balaguer, managing director of Accenture Learning, about the future of training. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from US and UK training experts about the changes and challenges facing training and the impact that these will have on the work of trainers. The interview with Ellen Balaguer discusses the continuing need for organizations to invest in training, the role that training will play within organizations and the future of the training profession. Findings – Argues that the focus of trainers will be on supporting employee learning rather than delivering training. Sees this as involving a wide range of techniques, including computer-based techniques. Stresses the need to be able to demonstrate the value of training and learning initiatives. Ellen Balaguer argues that on-demand, personalized learning can be delivered if learning management systems and knowledge management systems are integrated. She also sees workflow learning and mobile learning as being the key developments within training in the next few years. Originality/value – Debates the future of training.ISSN: 1535-7740Reference: 35AE689
