Purpose – describes how the UK government department, the Department for Work and Pensions, has shifted the emphasis from training to learning, and increased the use of self-managed learning. Design/methodology/approach – quotes the experience of Kam Mund, a trainer at the Department, who joined a self-managed learning group to solve her time management problems. Explains how self-managed learning groups operate within the Department and the e-learning portal that supports individual self-managed learning. Also discusses other measures that have been used to boost learning, particularly the moves to improve staff morale and the sense of job security among staff, and the steps taken to embed blended learning and networking within the Department’s job centers. Findings – argues that the Department of Work and Pensions has gone further than rebadging the training department and has developed effective measures to encourage learning. Originality/value – profiles a successful shift from training to learning.ISSN: 1358-6297Reference: 35AU079
