Purpose - To extend resource-based business strategy to the level of the individual. Design/methodology/approach - reviews the resource-based view of business strategy, explaining how it allows firms to determine the value of resources and consider how to redeploy or recombine resources to generate new strategic capabilities. Outlines a process for using the resource-based view at the individual level which involves context-setting; making a list and checking it twice; applying the model in accordance with four questions: is the resource valuable, rare, costly to imitate and organizationally leveraged; and undertaking individual strategic assessment in the nature of potential responses to the four questions: competitive parity; competitive disadvantage; temporary competitive advantage; and sustainable competitive advantage. Gives examples of how the use of the resource-based view at the individual level can provide powerful, intimate insights into people, requiring absolute confidentiality. Findings - maintains that the value of using the resource-based view at the individual level provides the manager-coach with the information and opportunity for discussion with the employee. Research limitations/implications - has no stated implications for future research. Practical implications - Provides a framework for managers to promote coaching or discussions that may encourage employee development and possibly increase organizational effectiveness. Originality/value - contributes to the literature on coaching and individual development, adapting the resource-based view to the individual level of analysis for the purpose of coaching individual performance and improve organizational effectiveness.
