Describes the strong incentives for companies to focus attention on the energy demands of their IT facilities, including desktop computers (PCs), servers, and printers, where the amount of energy being demanded by such facilities is considerable and is growing rapidly. Points to the forecast growth of the global number of computers in use, which is expected to reach four billion by 2020, and the strong incentive this provides for companies to ensure that they are not investing money in inefficient technology. Argues that the global economic and financial crisis and recession has also encouraged companies to think about “green IT” in terms of its return on investment, and the issue is no longer about corporate social responsibility (CSR). Examines some of the approaches that IT departments can adopt to accomplish green It, including server virtualization, the use of data centres, and power management.
