Williams Refrigeration a key part of Balkan relief kitchens

Williams Refrigeration is a key part of a recent multi-million pound order to supply a massive shipment of mobile catering kitchens in Kosovo and Macedonia.

Williams' equipment worth more than £400,000 has been fitted into the units designed and built by PKL Group, one of the UK's leading specialists in mobile kitchens. The fully equipped and pre-installed kitchens, called Transworld Systems, are delivered ready to use and linked to generators to provide complete operational catering units for 17 separate British Army bases. The facilities are dramatically improving life for the 5,000 soldiers who might otherwise endure a very basic lifestyle in their tented camps.

Williams' contribution to the force's support includes 30 Opal counter refrigerator units, 15 Garnet, 13 Sapphire and 7 Zircon refrigerators, 15 Garnet freezers, 15 Sapphire freezers and 7 Zircon freezers. Also included in the order were 85 of Williams' dry bain marie/hot cupboards and ambient counters.

A field situation like this is going to test kitchen equipment to its limits, with durability and reliability amongst the most important factors. PKL already has extensive experience of this market, having supplied similar units to the British Army in its earlier role in Bosnia.

And Williams' cabinets fitted the bill in PKL's Transworld System modules. PKL managing director Paul Rogers, says:

The equipment we install has to be the very best, no matter where it is going ... The forces in Kosovo now have access to catering equipment used by the world's top restaurant chefs, but we can supply versions of these units to anyone who requires high quality equipment in a portable form for events and facilities.

By insisting on the best equipment, PKL knows in advance its units can handle anything likely to be encountered by chefs.

To Williams Refrigeration the contract represents not only one of their largest-ever orders, but a test of their equipment's ability to withstand the hardest conditions in the field. All the cabinets are standard Williams units, with no concessions to their unusual location.

The Opal chillers are three- or four-door units with sliding doors, offering chilled storage underneath stainless steel counters. The Garnet and Sapphire chillers offer gastronorm storage in either long or wide format, while the Zircon offers an extremely compact format for storage in niches where space is limited.

Williams' extensive range includes commercial refrigeration, bakery equipment and a variety of specialist designs such as heated cabinets.
