Abstract

The dual career family, which at one time was considered a rarity, is a lifestyle being accepted by more and more couples today. The postwar period has seen a boom in the employment of married women, a situation which will be enhanced by the forseeable drop in the birth rate, the hastening of completing child‐rearing and the shrinking of the work week. With the rapid promotion of automation in industry more attention will be needed to give professional training to women, especially when they have completed rearing their children. Whereas the societal role for married women was predetermined, this is being gradually replaced by a freedom in “role choice” among women who are educated. This is a far cry from the social situation which prevailed when Freud said that “anatomy was a woman's destiny”. At that time, women's roles revolved solely around the home. However, today they can devote a substantial portion of their effort and time to an added role which is played outside the home.
