Abstract

The 13th International Congress of The World Federation of Foreign Language Teachers' Associations (FIPLV) took place in Lucerne last March, and one of the demonstrations was an experimental tape‐slide presentation on ARELS Oral Examinations (AOEs). It produced — as presentations on ARELS Orals usually do — some lively reactions: the most unexpected was the comment that they were “the Rolls Royce of Examinations” and, by implication, only for the privileged few. The remark has, of course, other interpretations, discussion of which is an interesting exercise. For example: is their reliability exceptionally good? Are they extremely expensive? Is their construction a masterpiece of detailed engineering? Do they set a standard for others to follow? And — the ultimate question — are they the Best in the World?
