Abstract

THE PROBLEM OF WHERE TO START THE MULTI‐DIMENSIONAL NATURE OF THE SUBJECT OPERATION PHOENIX is about living and working in a technological society. It bears this title because it started off, about five years ago, as a study of what Britain has to do to achieve national regeneration. My method of working included two main activities: first, monitoring the mass of information published world‐wide on the subject of living and working in a technological society; and, secondly, isolating certain trends and streams of thought by this process and then exposing them to criticism and analysis in a series of seminars, both in‐plant and public, so as to get some reaction to these ideas. My purpose was not only to make discoveries but also to communicate them at the same time as a means of further refining them.
