Abstract

Some three quarters of a million books are sent through the post on interlibrary loan each year in the UK. The vast majority would appear to arrive at their destinations unharmed, but lack of information on the casualties is probably due to the fact that many librarians, receiving back their bruised possessions, will shrug their shoulders with the thought that this is the price you pay in agreeing to take part in the interlending network. Occasionally, however, a librarian is moved to voice his protest at the way in which a book was inadequately wrapped, and because we have received one or two comments recently (not aimed at the BLL) we thought it timely to take a closer look at the handling of book parcels generally.
