Abstract

THE custom of grouping works of literature, art and science in decades may originally have been arbitrary. But the influence of numbers on the human mind is such that, as we look back, French post‐war novels seem to fall quite naturally into two groups according to whether they were written before or after 1930. The novels of the earlier period are quite distinct in purpose and outlook from those which have appeared during the last seven years.
