Abstract

A typical mental hospital, such as the one where I am librarian, has the population of a small town and quite as much diversity. There are nearly 2,000 patients at any one time drawn from all walks of life, and some 700 members of staff— not only doctors and nurses but others, from administrators to plumbers.
