Abstract

I mentioned in one of my previous articles that one of the ways of showing that the organisational climate was right for the sort of risk‐taking implied by self‐development was to run a coaching workshop at which the principles and techniques of coaching by the boss were explained, but, more importantly, top management could take part and thus demonstrate their informed support for the concept. John Menzies (Holdings) Ltd and Ciba Geigy Ltd are companies which have run a series of workshops, with the managing director and other main board directors taking part, and there is no doubt that this fact took the exercise out of the realms of “Trainer's Fantasy” and showed that coaching was going to be part of the company's philosophy.
