Abstract

The aim of the first part of this article is to develop four arguments which, in the author's opinion, must be resolved before any real progress can be made in the teaching of mathematics. The second part will outline the means by which these problems can be solved, which, if generally adopted, would mean a vast increase in the number of young people trained in the ways of mathematical thought and better ready to take their places in industry or commerce
