Abstract

In order to ease the transition from school to college and to assist in the correct placement of students on technical courses, the Crowther Report advocated that experiments should be undertaken with a full‐time induction period (lasting one month in the Autumn) for all students starting a normal three‐year or five‐year day‐release course. The recent White Paper ‘Better Opportunities in Technical Education’ repeated this recommendation and asked colleges to experiment both with full‐time induction courses and tutorial methods.
