Abstract

In 1960 the University of Durham Advanced‐Level examination included the question, “An oil drop, carrying one electronic charge (i.e. 4·8 × 10–10 e.s.u.) is held stationary midway between two parallel horizontal plates maintained at a potential difference of 500 volts and 1 cm. apart. Calculate the mass of the drop. If the field between the plates is reversed calculate the time taken for the drop to reach the appropriate plate”. No information is given about the medium between the plates, hence the time taken by the drop cannot be calculated.
