Abstract

In 1959 a converted ship brought the world's first commercial cargo of liquefied natural gas across the Atlantic to Britain. Against the prophecies of the many critics, the trip was successful, signposting the way to an international multi‐million pound project — the importing of natural gas from the Sahara for British use.
