Abstract

Risking the wrath of the vice‐chancellors and in the middle of the long vacation, Mr Grosland has at last accepted the January recommendation of the Committee of Public Accounts that the Auditor General should have access to the books of the University Grants Committee and the universities. After considerable opposition and the inevitable flurry of academic quills, the £230 million of public money involved this year in university finance will come under public scrutiny. The Comptroller and Auditor General should find himself fascinated by the explanations offered.
