Abstract

A new survey of student failure at universities by the University Grants Committee showed that nearly one in eight of the students admitted to universities drop out without graduating, about half of them at the end of the first year. The main finding of the report, the first which has ever given details about and identified individual universities, was that 4688 of the 35 386 undergraduate students who should have graduated in 1966 left without a degree, a drop‐out rate of 13·3 per cent.
