Abstract

Patrick Pearse, one of the sacred heroes of Ireland's 1916 Rebellion, had, among other things, a squint, an oedipus complex, and an obsession with blood sacrifice. His writings, to varying degrees, reflect these characteristics. Pearse was also, however, a school master, and this led to one of his most famous writings, The Murder Machine — an indictment of the Irish educational system in 1915. Horrifyingly, his criticisms have still been quoted in the Ireland of the 1960's.
