Abstract

My personal involvement with the Diploma of Higher Education began with my membership of the James Committee which proposed the diploma, then with the higher education group that defined the guidelines for colleges and universities, and currently as chairman of the group at the Council for National Academic Awards responsible for the validation of diplomas in colleges and polytechnics. My aim in this article, however, is not to attempt to describe the major shifts in policy that have taken place during that time, as this has been excellently done by Dr. Byrne; it is quite simply to describe the way in which one college has used the opportunity presented by this new qualification in higher education.
