Viewpoint: After ten years education, they need training
Abstract
The level of juvenile unemployment remains disturbingly high. In part only is this due to the depressed state of the economy, as is confirmed by a number of surveys recently undertaken by Education & Training of employment prospects with special reference to juveniles. For example in hotels and restaurants, particularly in London's West End, where a high percentage of the employees are Spanish and Portuguese, more than half of the firms contacted reported that they experienced difficulty in obtaining staff. Chambermaids, kitchen personnel, oyster men, and hall porters were amongst those in particularly short supply. In part, this situation is due to the fact that the work has a low skill content and is poorly paid. This situation will not be solved when the economic upswing occurs.
