Abstract

A new Further Education Curriculum Review and Development Unit has been set up by the Secretary of State for Education and Science, following wide consultations with 26 outside bodies including local authority associations and teachers' organisations. It is intended that the Unit should become a major contributor to curriculum development throughout the further education service, by reviewing and evaluating existing curricula; identifying overlap, duplication and deficiencies; carrying out specific duties or helping with curricula experiments; offering recommendations for improvement; and disseminating information on curricula matters in further education. It will have no responsibility for examinations or the award of qualifications. The main attention of the Unit is expected to be directed for some considerable time towards the curricula for the more immediate post‐school stages of education. Within that, an early priority will be to contribute to the programme of pilot schemes of vocational preparation for young people who until now have received little or no further education. The Unit will also be interested in schemes which, while not part of the formal programme of pilot projects, are making similar provisions.
