Abstract

Whatever we say today on any of the topics before us comes down in the end to the quality of the teaching profession. It is the individual teacher in his classroom who is going to determine whether education ‘clicks’ for the children in his care. No amount of central direction, legislation, or advice is going to change that. We have, therefore, got to ask ourselves during this ‘great debate’ whether the system we have for the education and training of our teaching force is either adequate or efficient. Are the changes which are proposed or are taking place likely to improve the system?
