Abstract

Each working day the Post Office handles 32 million letters and packets. It is estimated that half of these are bills, invoices, leaflets, advertisements, pools entries and the like. Of the remaining half at least 8 million are business communications, and of these probably a quarter are likely to be letters, memoranda, reports and notices requiring composition, So every day 2 million messages, long and short, trivial and important, necessary and needless, go off to their recipients in the UK and all over the world.
