Abstract

Design is vital in the rapidly changing world in which our children are growing up. It influences every moment of their lives from the places in which they will choose to work and play to the products which an increasingly sophisticated society demands. It is therefore essential that the next generation, no matter what their chosen role may be, are educated in design; and good design is important in helping to build a strong and successful national economy. Although attitudes are changing, society still gives top priority to pure sciences and mathematics with insufficient attention to applied and practical arts. As a result too few secondary school leavers have much appreciation of design. The views of the Design Council's Education Advisory Committee working party are that this traditional approach to secondary education should be reviewed, and that design education should be considered as an important element in secondary education curricula. It is hoped that their views will inspire comment from parents, educationists and industrialists, so that a fully considered and constructive document can be published next Spring. The closing date for comments is 1 November, when the working party will be reconvened to prepare the final report.
