Abstract

Mathematical tests are ubiquitous in apprentice selection, and employers are invariably critical of the results. A 50 per cent failure rate once considered calamitous is now regarded with practised equanimity. It was in this context that a pilot study of apprentice selection was conducted based on the experiences of 9 organisations ( 3 training associations and 6 companies) operating in Northern England.
