Abstract

A lower proportion of 16‐19 year olds attend post‐compulsory education in the United Kingdom than in any other Western developed country, except the Republic of Ireland and Portugal. I should not doubt that they will both pass us in the next decade. If we just take 18‐year‐olds still at school, we find that way back in 1973 the USA could boast that 75 per cent fell into this category, Belgium had 47 and Sweden 45. Dear old England mustered just under 20 per cent.
