Inside the Tower of Babel

Abstract

Since January 1981 the four miles of corridors in the cruciform Berlaymont building, which houses nearly 6,500 officials of the Commission of the European Communities in Brussels, have been echoing to a seventh official language — Greek. Although the linguistic invasion until now has been only a gradual one, the problems such enlargement presents are formidable. In a few years Spain and Portugal are to become members; there then will be nine official languages.
