Abstract

Pupils from 23 secondary schools in North Yorkshire have taken part in the Design and Make Competition, a contest organised by York & District Schools and Industry Project to encourage closer relations between local schools and industry and for which secondary school pupils have been working on projects closely related to industrial design and manufacture. Competitors in each of four age groups, covering the whole secondary school age range, have been set four different briefs to design and make a practical product. The work takes place as part of normal classroom activity, with some competitors entering their work as part of the course work assessment for CSE, ‘O’ and ‘A’ level examinations. It is expected that some will enter other national competitions as well. The Competition is intended as an imaginative way of promoting active cooperation between the educational and industrial sectors in the area, leading to better understanding of each other's needs. Judging of the pupils' work is based on the industrial design criteria of sound design, best use of materials, ease of manufacture, and standard of workmanship. The result was announced at a special reception and prize‐giving at York Guildhall last month.
