Abstract

In order to remove a common misunderstanding, I must begin by drawing the distinction between Ford Motor Company and its dealers. They are not one and the same. Ford Motor Company is a firm which designs, builds and markets the products; and this article is about training within that firm, which in Britain employs some 55,000 people. Dealerships are independent organisations linked to Ford only by a franchise, whether in the United Kingdom or elsewhere. It is they who sell to the public. Naturally the local Ford Company takes a very keen interest in how they conduct their affairs, but that is entirely their responsibility. It is up to, for example, Godfrey Davis of London or Kontellis of Athens to train their own people, who learn the essentials of their jobs within the dealership.
