Abstract

British education is being increasingly exported to the Far East. Parents in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore and South Korea are regarding Britain more and more as the country in which to educate their children; Hong Kong, in fact, has set up a special joint‐funding scheme. In order to cater for this growing interest Gulliver Books Ltd., a Hong Kong‐based company, has published the first bilingual (English/Chinese) guide to the British educational system, British Airways Guide to Education in the United Kingdom. Assuming no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, the book provides a comprehensive description of options open to overseas students; both the independent and state sectors are fully covered. The book describes the viewpoint of the different educational sectors and identifies what they have to offer, providing an overview with concessions for the cultural differences of each region. Features in the book include Western teaching methods, upper age limits, immigration procedures, awards and scholarships, guardianship and English as a Foreign Language (EFL).
