Abstract

Why When, nearly sixty years ago, I first faced the task of putting a written passage into fewer words, I was introduced to it by the junior English master. He called it précis writing. Not unnaturally, I concluded it was just an exercise in grammar and comprehension. It was left to the senior master a year or so later to mention the practical application, when he explained:
