Abstract
IN 1854 the Chemical Inspectorate, one of the oldest Government scientific establishments, was formed as a small unit of the War Office. Today it is an important organisation employing over 1,600 research and development chemists and assistants, whose responsibilities embrace over 2,000 service stores.
