Abstract

A new method of cleaning a gas holder prior to painting has been used successfully at the Leamington Spa gasworks of the West Midlands Gas Board (Warwickshire Division). This 80‐ft.‐diam. holder was cleaned while it still contained gas by using a special flame‐cleaning method after other methods had previously been tried without success. The new method involves the use of the strip cleaning technique of passing the flame over the metal surface in conjunction with ancillary descaling equipment in order to avoid overheating and distortion.
