Abstract

Severe corrosion problem in stainless steel vessels. A major chemicals/pharmaceuticals company approached Fluorocarbon Company Ltd of Hertford when stainless steel centifruge catchpots used in the processing of their products were failing in use after 3 days, due to the extremely corrosive nature of the chemical mix they were called upon to handle. The process required petroleum ether to be mixed with acetic acid, hydrochloric acid and sulphur dioxide followed by thionyl chloride. A trial coating of the vessel with polypropylene gave even less life, the coating becoming ineffective after only 24 hours.
