Abstract

As we librarians complete the transition from the affluence of the 1960s to the austerity of the 1980s, we are facing the most creative and challenging era of collection development in the history of librarianship. Bibliographers will have to face the transition with great optimism and make collection development a “joyful science” if we are to survive such austerity and overcome its resulting bibliographic depression. The bad news is only that we will have to work harder and become sharper bibliographers and administrators.
